Having recently purchased a Droughbuster, I am concerned about the use of ‘grey water’ that had come via a water softener. The following response was received from British Water:………….
“It is usually recommended that softened water should not be used in the garden; this is partly because some plants may be sensitive to the extra sodium in softened water and also on economic grounds as garden use usually involves significant quantities of water and it is usually unnecessary to soften water used in the garden.
It is unlikely that the use of softened water for washing, etc will significantly reduce the sodium content and so the grey water will contain the increased levels of sodium present in unused softened water. Consequently, if the grey water derived from softened water is used in the garden for more than the occasional watering it will result in an accumulation of sodium in the soil and this may be detrimental to plants in the long term. You could seek further advice from the Royal Horticultural Society.”
