Designing a garden on a budget can be a fun challenge. Determine what you can afford to spend, then choose plants and flowers that complement each other. Always look for sale items and shop around until you find something you like that you can afford.
Here are a few tips for creating a garden on a budget:
-Choose a plot
Consider what type of soil and how much sunlight your yard has. Choose varieties that will thrive in your featured location. If you are new to gardening, start with a small space and try to find plants that are easy to care for, such as irises, azaleas or nandinas.
-More bang for your buck
Bulbs are an economical way to ensure flowers in your garden for years to come. Buy in bulk at reduced prices. Consider color and height while designing your garden. Include a mix of early and late bloomers. Try daffodils, jonquils or tulips.
-Less is more
Don’t be afraid to space things out a bit or look for plants that will expand horizontally, rather than vertically. If money is tight, buy seeds. They take more work, but they’re much cheaper and it’s rewarding to watch them grow and blossom.
-Share the wealth
Use hearty plants that thicken with age and can be divided. Try hostas, candytuft and mums. Take root cuttings from existing plants to create new ones. Pussy willows and roses work well. Perennials, such as daylilies, will reseed themselves after blooming.
-Go green
Use compost instead of plant food and fertilizers. Make it from yard waste using leaves, grass clippings or plant prunings. Recycle organic leftovers from the kitchen and add them to your compost pile. Save money while helping the environment.
