From the time of its earliest recorded use in 10th century BC China, tea has been a favoured beverage of the masses. This popular commodity, derive from the leaves of the camellia sinensis plant, reached Europe by the 16th century.
From as far back as 200 BC, when the Han Dynasty of China touted the medicinal benefits of tea, its numerous advantages have received much attention. Many studies have shown that tea is helpful to both the immune system and brain functioning.
Tea is known to promotes the immune system’s effectiveness. According to a 2003 study from the National Academy of Sciences, tea’s many amino acids boost the capacity of the body’s T cells. These T cells defend and protect the body from infection and disease. In addition, tea’s high level of antioxidants effectively fight free radicals, which are responsible for conditions like cancer and heart disease. Antioxidants are a key factor in immune system’s ability to combat cancer, as well as serving as a preventive measure against the risks of the disease.
Along with its the benefits to the immune system, tea also affects brain functioning. Tea is a major source of L-theanine, an amino acid. When combined with caffeine, L-theanine decreases the alpha waves in the brain, while producing a calming effect. Alpha wave activity cause distraction and reduce concentration. With the calming of the alpha waves, the brain experiences improved mental focus and alertness. Tea drinkers everywhere enjoy the beverage for its taste and variety. With the health benefits of tea, each cup can bring the added satisfaction it is delicious, helpful and healthful.
