Carpets require regular care to remain in good condition. All carpeting should be vacuumed at least weekly and more often in homes where pets or children are present. Use a quality vacuum cleaner and take your time. This is not a job to be rushed! In addition, an annual cleaning by either the homeowner or a professional is advised. Proper care extends the life of your carpet, ensuring maximum service before replacement is needed.
No Shoes Please
To reduce carpet wear, especially in high traffic areas, do not wear shoes inside the house. Have slippers for each family member and develop the habit of removing shoes upon entering the home. This simple action will also prevent excess dirt from being tracked inside.
Accidents Will Happen
Sooner or later, no matter how careful you are, there will be an accident on your carpet. Take action immediately! Potential stains must be dealt with right away. If allowed to sit, they will be more difficult to remove and may permanently discolour the carpet.
After an accident, remove any solid matter. Then wick up as much of the moisture as possible with a light coloured absorbent cloth. Finally, lightly spray the stain with carpet spot remover and immediately begin blotting at the spot. Do not over-wet. Continue this process until all traces of the stain are removed.
Final Tip
On occasion candle wax, chewing gum or some other sticky solid substance gets stuck in the carpet. If not too deeply embedded, these substances can be carefully cut out of the carpet with sharp scissors.
