A variety of non-toxic cleaning products can be made at home with a few simple ingredients. All that is needed for most cleaning jobs is baking soda, washing soda, white distilled vinegar and liquid soap or detergent. Optional ingredients include olive oil, lemon juice and tea tree oil.
Cleaning
To make an all-purpose cleaner, combine ½ teaspoon washing soda and a bit of liquid soap with 500ml water and shake until the soda dissolves completely. Spray on surfaces to be cleaned and wipe off with a cloth.
Adding ¼ teaspoon liquid detergent and 15ml white vinegar to 500ml water makes a safe and effective window cleaner. Shake to mix, spray on glass and wipe off with a lint-free cloth.
Baking soda works much like an abrasive cleanser without danger of scratching surfaces. Simply mix baking soda and liquid detergent together to make a paste. Apply with a sponge and then rinse. For tough stains, let the paste sit undisturbed for a short while. Mix only what will be immediately used as it dries out quickly.
Polishing
Adding a ½ teaspoon of olive oil to 60ml vinegar or lemon juice makes a simple and effective furniture polish. Apply with a soft cloth.
Mould
Straight vinegar will kill the majority of mould. Just spray onto the area and leave. Do not rinse. The vinegar odour will vanish after a while.
For more stubborn mould problems, use 2 teaspoons tea tree oil in 500ml water. As with the vinegar spray, do not rinse.
Use these wonderful non-toxic cleaning product alternatives throughout your home!
