Christmas is almost here and so is that long-standing tradition of exchanging gifts. Shops will be creating a festive atmosphere and displaying all sorts of treasures. Keeping Christmas affordable amidst all this temptation can be a real challenge. There are several strategies, however, that can be used to save money this year.

Make a Budget

Determine the total amount of money available for gifts. Be realistic, taking income and all expenses into consideration. Commit to spending cash only. The goal is to save money, not roll expenses into the next year by incurring debt. Decide what you can comfortably afford and stick with it. (more…)

Water in the Winter Garden

Harsh winter

Adequate water in the garden is essential all year-round, even during the coldest months of winter. Although plants and trees may be dormant above ground, root systems continue to grow and develop despite frigid temperatures. Unless sufficient rain has fallen, supplemental watering is required. During winter, meet your garden’s various watering needs to ensure that plants stay healthy until warmer weather arrives.

Grasses and Other Plants

During winter, grasses and other plants need about 2.5 cm of water 2-4 times each month. Use a rain gauge to monitor the amount of rainfall and supplement, as needed. Do not water the lawn or garden when it is freezing. To prevent damage to plants, avoid spraying bare branches or foliage and water just at the ground level. (more…)

Feng Shui is the practice of arranging one’s environment to allow for the free flow of energy, known as Chi. Originating in ancient China, the principles of Feng Shui may be used within the home to increase happiness, health and prosperity.

Clear Clutter

To allow energy to flow freely, it is essential to dispense with clutter. This free flow of energy, or Chi, is especially critical in the space beneath the bed. To maximise the flow of Chi within your home, work toward eliminating clutter and freeing up as much space as possible. (more…)

Dispose and earn – the intelligent dust-bin

The idea of earning a few pounds on your own garbage was first introduced by Georgia Tech. A small income of money is supposed to support the recycling process and its development. The secret lies in this inconspicuous, yet smart rubbish bin.

The integrated system made up of a garbage container and RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), which is supposed to read information and tags from incoming waste. It is probable that the device will be sending statistics and other information about what we throw out to the nearest base, where the collected data will be calculated into an average market price of our “treasures”, minus a fee for the next bill.

It is worth mentioning that RFID radio identification system is becoming more popular each passing day. In a few years all products available in the market will have the tiny chip inserted. All necessary data about the product, its producer, suppliers, service and much more will be saved and stored in it to be available for its users at all times.

One of the components will also be a wireless connection with the local garbage collecting company. This will allow to send important information about the quality and type of our garbage, a pre-selection of sorts. The head office will know what they will be able to find in the next garbage transport way before the actual collecting. Thanks to that preparations for sorting process will be made, enabling sorting more waste of specific type. It might be bottles, paper, electronics and many more.

Some people are not optimistic, when thinking about the system. They are afraid that the RFID will be difficult to be found anywhere – there aren’t many products supported by the system sold and with help of the eco-bin we can get money only for these. And only whole, possibly undamaged. On the other hand, at some point the chip will probably food the market, pushed forcefully into everything, either we want it, or not. These skeptics are silenced easily. If you really care for the environment, you start with the small things, and RFID helps with that. The whole point of undamaged garbage is to lower the costs of recycling. All that money can go to improving and modernizing the process, thus helping cleaning Earth, at least a little. The money is the upside as well. Who wouldn’t want to get money only for taking out their trash? This might be like every small child’s dream, to be rewarded for cleaning.

Colour is all around us. It not only adds beauty to life but also has the ability to set the mood. Changing the paint colour inside your home is a relatively easy and inexpensive way to give it a fresh, updated look and feel. Consider these factors when choosing a colour scheme.

First Considerations

A colour scheme often must be planned around existing items such as furniture, carpeting or draperies. Decide whether these items will form the base of the colour scheme or provide accent colours only. If replacing these basic items, opt for neutral tones to enhance future versatility. (more…)

Keeping a child’s room organised can be easy and fun. The trick is to make organisation so simple that even your child can do it!

Clothing

To encourage children to keep clothing neat, bring storage to their level. Lower the wardrobe rod to be easily reached. Ensure that drawers slide easily open but will not pull all the way out. Separate clothing by category and tape a simple drawing of that drawer’s contents to the front of each drawer.

Contain It

Place baskets or clear plastic boxes on low shelves to contain art supplies, toy cars, doll clothing and accessories, blocks, and other toys with many pieces. Keep puzzle or game pieces in zip top bags to avoid spills should the box be dropped. Use underbed storage boxes for long items such as a train set. (more…)

Winter is a time of little activity in the garden. As the cold, short days are usually spent indoors, the garden is often neglected. There are a few basic tasks that need attention, however. To prevent damage and ensure enjoyment once warmer weather arrives, prepare your garden to survive the harsh winter weather conditions.

Clean Up

If you haven’t done so already, clean and put away all yard and garden tools. Once they are clean and dry, apply a coat of WD-40 to the metal parts of tools to help prevent rust and coat wooden handles with linseed oil. Drain hoses and wrap faucets to protect against freezing.

Attend to Plants

Thoroughly inspect all vegetation. Remove annuals that need replacement. Cut perennials to a height of 7-15 cm. Remove loose broken limbs but wait until the end of winter to actually prune shrubs and trees. Rake fallen leaves. For potted plants that will winter outdoors, bury the container, if possible. Visualise your favourite photo. Now imagine turning that same picture into a work of art. It’s easy! Just have that cherished photograph printed onto photo canvas for display in your home or office, either with or without a frame.

Miniature to Full Size Artwork
Photo canvas prints are affordable and come in a variety of sizes and styles to fit any space or budget. Consider a theme grouping of photos or have a landscape printed in series on two or three separate canvases.

Edging Options
Save money on framing by selecting a gallery wrap, mirror image or custom colour edging. These edge finishes complete the art and look terrific without a frame. Plain black or plain white edgings are also available.

Photo Editing
Photographs are often cropped prior to printing on canvas, thereby focusing on the important elements within the photo. Modifications may also be made to the background, and areas such as colour, contrast and intensity may be improved. (more…)

Small Children and Water Safety at Home

Small children are curious and quick. Even the best-supervised toddler may escape temporarily from time to time. While constant monitoring is the primary way to ensure your child’s safety, there are other measures that may be taken to reduce danger. Increase water safety around your home, inside and out.

Bathtub Safety
Always supervise small children as they bathe, even if an older sibling is also in the bathtub. Collect necessary bath items before putting the child into the tub so that everything needed is within easy reach. If a bathing seat is used to help a baby remain upright, never leave the little one unattended, not even for a few seconds. Although rare, drowning deaths do occur during bathing seat use.

Outdoor Water Features
Many gardens contain a water feature such as a pond or fountain. While these small pools or fountains are enjoyable, they are also an attractive danger for small children. Consider emptying the feature of water and converting it into a sandpit while the children are young. If this is not possible, cover the feature securely or completely enclose the area with childproof fencing. (more…)

Get rid of Dust Mites

Dust mites are microscopic bugs that eat dead skin cells shed by humans and pets. Although dust mites don’t bite, their waste products can cause allergies and asthma. Congregating in the soft surfaces of a home, such as carpets, bedding and upholstery, dust mites are particularly fond of warm, humid environments.

Ridding your home of dust mites is essential to the respiratory health of your family. Especially in homes where asthma or allergies are already an issue, effectively dealing with dust mites on a regular basis can make a huge difference in the health and comfort of family members. Follow these steps for a dust mite-free home.

To eradicate dust mites, start with bedding. Wash all bedding for humans and pets in hot water. Encase mattresses and pillows in dust mite-proof covers. Replace non-washable items, such as throw pillows or stuffed animals. If a non-washable item must be kept, tumble it in the dryer for several minutes on high heat. (more…)
