Child Safety in the Garden

Garden safety is of particular importance whenever children are present as there are many common garden items that may pose a danger to children. Review your garden for the following issues and address any that are found.

Water Features

Children are attracted to water. Regardless of size or depth, a water feature may pose a drowning or injury risk to a child. Use sturdy decorative fencing to secure ponds or pools, strategically place fountains to limit access, and never leave a child unattended.

Hazardous Plants

Small children routinely taste everything. Many plants are harmful or deadly if chewed on or swallowed. Know what plants are in your garden and whether any are poisonous. Consider replacing potentially harmful plants with non-toxic substitutes.

Gardening Tools and Supplies

Sharp tools and brightly coloured containers have an especial appeal to children. Keep all garden tools and supplies locked away. Also, opt for non-toxic alternatives to various chemical products that are commonly used in the garden.

Tripping and Falling Hazards

To reduce the likelihood of injury from a fall, ensure that decks, stairways or raised areas have railing or another barrier along the edge.

Create a Dedicated Space

Children like to help outside. If possible, establish a special area for children to play and garden. Create a magical play area by planting a circle of sunflowers or construct a simple flower tower covered with morning glories.

Finally, safeguard the garden from the children! Ensure that delicate plants or statuary are in areas inaccessible to children and make sure the children know which areas are off-limits.
