Do It Yourself: Sewing Spree!

Imagine this: you are preparing for an important party, you want to look fabulous and original. You open the closet, sift through everything you have stored there and come up with nothing that you would like to wear – everything was either seen already or unfit for the occasion, your mood, your partner’s outfit or whatever else. The only way out of the situation is a quick jaunt to the mall in search of something new that you will probably wear only this one time. A new addition to the pile of clothes that is overflowing from your closet every time you open it. But it can’t be helped, right? It might come in handy someday.

This is a problem that every girl and woman comes across countless times. Fortunately, there is a wonderful, exciting solution for it. Why not remake the cloth? Why not create something completely new, never seen before, something that will fit your tastes and personality? Many of us think that it is difficult task to do, that only professional seamstresses are able to make necessary changes in clothes. Wrong! It’s easier than you think and it will always make you feel special, one of a kind.

There’s an easy example for you: if you have a favorite tee that you somehow can’t fit into anymore but desperately want to keep it, you can easily make a bag out of it! All you need to do is to cut the sleeves off, turn what is left inside out and duct tape what you have left providing your future bag with a kind of lining. Next, you need to turn it to its side (so what is left on the top looks a bit like the shoulder strap it will become) and make a line at the bottom with a piece of white chalk – the line should be drawn about 2 inches above the hem. You should sew the tee along this line. No worries, if you’re not good with a needle, you can even use a stapler! Just remember to put them really close to each other. When you’re done, you should put another piece of duct tape on top of your seam so it won’t get damaged in usage. When this is done, you might want to put it on the side again and make a seam along the hypotenuse of the corners, so the bag would gain correct shape. There, all done! You can turn the tee inside-out again and enjoy your new bag!

People are eager to share their ideas on their blogs, message boards and forums (a few movies you can find below). Not only is it a creative way of expression, it is incredibly cheap! Shop-a-holics use this customization method in their therapies, making their own clothes instead of spending fortunes on new ones. Maybe it’s time for you to try it?
