A simple yet delightful play area can be created using materials provided by nature. Expensive play equipment is unnecessary and may actually inhibit creativity. To design a play area that will grow with the children, use the natural features in the garden and add minimal age-appropriate enhancements.
Open Areas
Children need to run and play. Allow plenty of open space for active games and quiet lounging. Invest in inexpensive, portable play equipment like a croquet or badminton set. Even the smallest of children can participate with age appropriate modification of the rules.

Simple Rope Swing
From a sturdy tree limb, hang a single rope with a few small knots for handholds and a loop or substantial knot tied in the end and watch the kids become Tarzan or pirates. Add a smoothly sanded board as a seat just above the bottom knot for added comfort and versatility.
Natural Hiding Places
Trim beneath existing bushes or foliage to form special places in which to hide or plant sunflowers in a circle to form a sheltered area. Encourage imaginative play by having the children attach a magical name to each hiding spot.
Climbing and Jumping
Should a large rock be present, do not remove it! Instead, clear the area around the rock to allow children to climb atop. As an alternative, use a length of a fallen tree or a mound of dirt as a place for children to practice balancing and jumping.
Safety Concerns
Children fall down. To reduce the danger of injury, ensure that the play area is covered with a soft surface such as grass or wood chips. As an alternative, rubber chippings are also available.
