Seasonal Home Maintenance – Get Ready for Summer!

Certain home maintenance tasks should be performed on an annual or semi-annual basis. Appropriate tasks for spring or early summer include ensuring that window screens and the cooling system are ready for the impending warmer weather, checking for water damage around the home or garden and performing a seasonal check on home safety equipment such as smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

Inspect each window screen and remove for a thorough cleaning, if possible. Repair small problems or completely re-screen, if necessary. Consider switching to finer mesh screening in areas where midges are a nuisance.

Check the garden and around the exterior of the home for water damage or other weather related issues that may have arisen during the winter months. Inspect the roof and siding for damage. Look for rotting wood along the eves. Clean the gutters and downspouts. Check the attic, especially around the chimney, for signs of water leaks or seepage. Also, ensure that water drains away from the home. Dig a small ditch or install a French drain, if warranted.

Although the danger of a house fire decreases during the summer months, it is wise to check all smoke detectors to ensure proper function. Remember to check carbon monoxide detectors as well and change the batteries, if necessary.

For homes with some type of cooling appliance or system, now is the time for a test run. Ensure that the unit is functioning properly before it is needed. Also, retrieve portable fans from storage and test each. Clean or replace, as appropriate.
